Air
Quality Index
Riverbank is flying new flags
– one is located at Jacob Myers Park and one at the western
entrance sign. These flags are displayed to show residents and
visitors what our daily Air Quality Index is and whether or not
we are having a clean air day. Air Quality Index or AQI, is how
pollutants in our air are measured. There are five major air
pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone,
particle pollution or particulate matter, carbon monoxide,
sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. For people suffering from
respiratory disease or asthma, knowing the air quality can help
them protect themselves from these pollutants.
Staff will monitor the Valley Air website each day and will
change the flags as needed. There are four colors, each with
its own meaning: green means the air quality is good with 0-50 AQI; yellow is moderate 51-100 AQI; and orange flag means the
air is unhealthy for sensitive groups 101-150 AQI; and red means
unhealthy for all, 151-200 AQI.
If your daily trip does not
take you past one of the flags, you can still find out the day’s
reading by going to the Valley Air website at
www.valleyair.org
click on “Air Quality Information”, then “Daily Forecast” or
call 1-800-766-4463.
Persons with asthma or other
respiratory illnesses can find more information from the
Stanislaus County Asthma Coalition at 209-558-4846 or visit
their website at
www.stanasthma.org.
