Did you know?
Do you know your City Parks?
We have grown, not only in land mass and population, but in
parks as well. Do you know your parks? Do you know where they
are and what is available at each? By using the BNSF Railroad
Tracks (north-south) and Patterson Road (west-east), I have
divided the City in to quadrants.
Here is a short tour of Riverbank City parks –
Castleberg
Park located on Eighth Street between Kentucky and Townsend in
the southeast quadrant. This is a 12-acre park with playground
equipment, barbecue area, picnic tables, picnic gazebo,
restrooms, basketball courts, baseball diamonds, soccer field,
and walking trail around the perimeter.
Douglas
Whorton Park
is a one-acre park with playground equipment, picnic tables, and
a basketball court. It is located on Arizona at Tennessee
Avenue, also in the southeast quadrant.
Hutcheson Park
at the corner of High and Fourth Streets is one-acre of open
space. It has a few picnic tables and young trees. This park
is on the northeast side of town.
Pioneer Park
on First Street between High Street and Riverside Drive, in the
northeast quadrant. Pioneer offers playground equipment,
barbecue area, picnic tables, restrooms, horseshoe pits, and a
basketball court. The Riverbank Scout Hall is located here and
is available for rent through the Recreation Department.
Jacob Myers
Park
is located across the Stanislaus River on Santa Fe Road, north
of the City across the First Street Bridge. Jacob Myers Park
(or JMP) is on the banks of the Stanislaus River. There is
playground equipment, a “finger” park where kids can play with
their small toy cars and trucks, barbecue pits, picnic tables, a
large gazebo area, restrooms, a boat ramp, and plenty of grass
for volleyball games or badminton. Fishing is permitted, State
Regulations and Licensing is followed. A new area of the Park
has opened at the “back” with a one-mile bike/pedestrian trail
and an area for group camping.
Community
Center (Veteran’s) Park
is on Santa Fe Street between Sixth and Seventh Streets, the
backside of the Park is Stanislaus Street. The Community Pool
is at the corner of Seventh and Stanislaus Streets. The Park
has playground equipment, picnic tables, restrooms, and lots of
grass and shade. The Community Center building is available for
rent through the Recreation Department. The Park is where the
annual Farmers’ Market is held.
Safreno Park
is in the southwest quadrant, located on McAllister Lane between
Crossroads and McDevitt Drive. This is a five-acre park with
playground equipment on one end and a large grassy area used for
soccer. Safreno Park is a storm drain basin during the winter
and sometimes looks more like Safreno Lake!
Staley
Park/Skate Park
on First Street between Santa Fe and Stanislaus Streets and in
the southeast quadrant. This is a half-acre park with trees,
grass, and benches on the Staley side and a great concrete Skate
Park on the other side. The Skate Park is one of the best in
the County and it sees kids from all over California. There is
a restroom.
Zerillo Park
is tucked in to the hillside down in River Cove in the northwest
quadrant. It is located on Briarcliff Drive at the south end of
Turnberry Lane. There is a playground area, barbecue pits,
picnic tables, restrooms, tennis and volleyball courts, and a
walking trail.
Silva Park
is on Chancellor and Antique Rose Way in the Crossroads area
located in the southwest quadrant. Silva Park has playground
equipment, half basketball courts, and lots of grass.
Also in the
southwest quadrant are Sorensen Park, Rotary Park,
and Harold B. Harless Park. Sorensen has a Tot Lot and
is located at Donner Trail and Homewood Way; Rotary Park is also
a Tot Lot and it is located on Prospectors Parkway next to the
new Crossroads Elementary School; and Harless Park has
playground equipment and a basketball court and can be found on
the east end of Pocket Avenue.
