Street Basketball – Can we play?

Seems there are a lot of basketball hoops around the City and with the “hoops”, come violations.  There are City ordinances that state citizens cannot block any street, alley, or sidewalk within our City limits.  Basketball hoops must remain on private property.  City Code Enforcement Officers are beginning their neighborhood visits and will be citing residents who are in violation of City Codes.  Violations are not limited to basketball hoops in the street or on the sidewalk; you or your neighbor may also be cited for wasting water by allowing lawn sprinklers to run so long that water is running down the gutter to the storm drain.  For more information regarding obstruction of streets or sidewalks, see Riverbank City Code §95.01(A) and §95.03(D).  More information on water conservation is available under the Public Works Department.

Garage & Yard Sales

With summer weather you will see a lot more yard and garage sales on the weekends.  Another violation you may not be aware of is the posting of those sale signs that advertise where the yard sale is being held.  Did you know it is illegal to post those signs on City property?  It is also illegal to post them on utility poles.  Garage sale signs are to be posted on private property only (if the property is not yours, you will need the owner’s permission).  Do not post your signs on City property – including trees, utility poles, street signs, stop signs, or on another person’s property (without permission).

Be sure to pick up your Yard/Garage Sale Permit at City Hall South from the Finance Department, 6617 Third Street.  Permits are $5.00 and are good for two 3-consecutive day sales per year.  RCC 110.18 (C)(1-2)

Landmark Tree Ordinance

Have you heard of the new tree ordinance which the City Council recently passed?  Its intent is to conserve large mature trees, primarily Valley Oaks and Sequoia Redwoods throughout the City.  This Ordinance will prohibit the removal of large diameter trees unless a tree conservation permit has been issued by the City’s Planning Department.  The entire Ordinance can be read here – Ordinance 2006-009 – and if you have any questions, please contact the Planning Department at 863-7120.

Farmers’ Market & More…

Have you been out to the Market yet?  If not, you really need to head out there!  Live entertainment on June 28 is the Bourbon Street Band and there may be a couple of young folks singing with them this week.  The annual Riverbank Idol contest was to be held on this date but the number of entries was so low we decided to move it to August and rename it the Riverbank Talent Show.  New rules and guidelines will be available in two weeks.

What’s up next?

Keep an eye open throughout the summer months.  You will see more stores and restaurants opening up in the Crossroads Center.  Be sure to visit the Farmers' Market for fresh produce, great food, and terrific entertainment!
