Red Flag Warning - Hot Weather Advisory

The Office of Emergency Services (OES) has announced a Red Flag Warning for Stanislaus County.  A “Red Flag Warning” means high fire danger with the increased probability of a quickly spreading vegetation fire.  Below average rainfall, low humidity, gusty winds, dry fuels (grass, brush, and trees), and high temperatures are fueling the warning.

The lack of rainfall and the early return of hot weather have caused officials to issue this warning and has provided the following Red Flag Warning tips:

  • Take extra precautions if using a barbecue;

  • Be cautious if using power equipment near dry vegetation;

  • Be cautious if driving an off-road vehicle because heat or sparks could start a fire;

  • Motorists are cautioned not to pull over into dry grass or throw any combustibles from their cars;

  • Homeowners are advised to avoid using chain saws, mowers, and weed eaters around dry grass;

  • Campers should check with the local jurisdictional agency for any burn restrictions that may be enforced; and

  • Please, smoke only in designated areas and properly dispose of smoking materials.

Hot Weather Tips:

  • Drink plenty of water, avoid drinks with caffeine;

  • Stay cool indoors if possible;

  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully (avoid the heat if possible);

  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen if you go out; and

  • Pace yourself if working outside, allow adequate time and drink fluids.  Cool down if needed.

There are community resources in English and Spanish for hot weather preparedness at www.stanemergency.com, the emergency preparedness website for Stanislaus County.
